The Peninsular War (1808–13) was the principal British contribution to the land campaign against Bonaparte. The war opened with a Spanish revolt against Napoleon’s attempt to install his brother Joseph as King of Spain; at Spanish request the British landed an expeditionary force in Iberia under Sir Arthur Wellesley.

At Vimeiro, Portugal, Wellesley carefully selected a defensive position – and let the French attack. They sustained 2,000 casualties. Plenty of pickings, therefore, for the jackdaw-like British soldier.

Rifleman Harris served with the 95th Rifles.
